STUDENTS' PERCEPTION OF THE IMPLANTING OF ISLAMIC VALUES IN THE ENGLISH TEACHING MATERIALS



ABSTRACT

The implementation of Islamic shari’a in Aceh nowadays should influence every single aspects of Aceh educational system, including the teaching materials used by the teachers. In fact, for non-Islamic subject such as English, the Islamic value as the extract of Islamic shari’a is not found in the teaching materials. Then, it is worried that the implementation of Islamic shari’a is not being applied comprehensively in the Aceh educational system. Since the researcher has always paid great apprehensiveness to this issue, she conducted a research entitled “The Students’ Perception of the Implanting of Islamic Value in English Teaching Materials”. This research was conducted to know how the students (as the education participants) behold on the implanting of Islamic value in their English subject materials. The research was carried out during September to November 2013 with 182 samples that were non-probably chosen from 1745 students of MAN 1, MAN 2, and MAN 3 Banda Aceh. In collecting the data, the researcher applied survey method with three techniques of data collection: observation, questionnaire, and interview. Moreover, the building perception session was also given to the students before answering the questionnaire. It is to help the students have a perception toward the Islamic English materials issue. There were two main findings derived from the analysis of data. First, it showed that almost 100% of the total samples (180 students) have a positive perception of the implanting of Islamic value in English teaching materials. Moreover, the students’ motives of being agreed with the issue dominantly are to learn English with the effort of the implementing of the Islamic shari’a in schools’ environments and to learn English with the effort to counteract the bad impact of westernization. Second, it also showed that the English teachers in the three MANs supported the Islamic English materials issue to be applied in the classroom activity. They realized that this is one of the ways to support the implementation of Islamic shari’a in Aceh. Hence, it can be deduced that the implanting of Islamic value in English teaching learning is accepted and reasonable to be brought into a particular regulation in Aceh educational system.
