IMPROVING STUDENTS' SPEAKING ABILITY THROUGH DEPATE ACTIVIBY



ABSTRACT
This thesis entitled “Improving Students’ Speaking Ability through Debate Method”. The aim of study is to generally know whether the debate method significantly improve students’ speaking ability. The population of this research was all the student of first grade of SMAN 1 Bireuen. Thus, the sample of this research is ten students from Acceleration class. The sample was selected by using purposive sampling. This study is quantitative method. The data is gained by teaching, test and questionnaire. The teaching was conducted for three meetings. Based on the result of analysis the questionnaire of this research shows that, the first grade of acceleration students of SMAN 1 Bireuen are interested in studying speaking by using debate Method. In addition, from the analysis of test scores, it shows a very significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The mean of pre-test was 11.2 and the mean of post-test was 16.4. Thus, the mean of post-test is higher than of pre-test. However the score of t0 is 1.74. In this case, the score of t0 is higher than ttable; 1,74 > 1,33. Therefore, according to the examining of hypothesis it shoes a very significant difference between t0 is higher than ttable. So it can be concluded that debate technique has improving students’ speaking ability.
