ABSTRACT
Writing is one of communication tools used by people to deliver the information, express the ideas, and share many things in written form. In producing a good piece of writing paper people need to practice and do many exercises. Besides, the strategy used also can be one of an important elements in assigning the students’ to improve their writing ability. This thesis entitled writing journal in improving students’ writing ability ( A Study at Madrasah Aliyah Ulumul Quran Pagar Air). It was aimed to identify the use of writing journal in improving students’ writing ability, to investigate the correlation between the students’ habit of writing journal and the students’ improvement in writing ability and to find out the obstacles faced by students in writing. In addition, to achieve the goal of this study, the researcher conducted the research at Madrasah Aliyah Swasta Ulumul Quran boarding school. The population of this study included all of students of Islamic Senior High School of Ulumul Qur'an Banda Aceh year 2014/2015, while the sample was the second grade students which consisted of 28 students. Moreover, Regarding data analysis, the method used for this study was quantitative-qualitative research. In addition, to help her in collecting the data needed, the researcher applied some techniques; document analysis and questionnaire. In analizing the questionnaire the researcher used qualitative method and in analizing the documents she used quantitative method with correlation analysis. The results indicated that the value of a significant correlation was 0.836. It means, the Ho of this reseacrh, there is significant correlation between the habit of writing journal and the students’ writing ability, was accepted and H1 was rejected. In addition, the result of document analysis also showed that the use of journal writing improve the students’ writing ability.
