ABSTRACT
The title of this thesis is “Students’ Ability in Mastering Reading Comprehension (A Comparative Study between SMAN 1 Kuta Cot Glie and MAN Indrapuri)”. The aims of this study are to see if there is any significant different or not between the second year students of SMAN I Kuta Cot Glie and the second year students of MAN Indrapuri in reading comprehension. This study also wants to know which group of students is better in sub reading skills. The sample of this study was one class taken from the second year students of SMAN I Kuta Cot Glie and one class taken from the second year students of MAN Indrapuri. The total samples of the second year students from SMAN I Kuta Cot Glie who took part when the data taken were 24 students and 24 students from MAN Indrapuri. so, the total samples of the two schools were 48 students. In collecting data, the writer gave a set of test to the two groups. There are two reading passages; the titles are The Stone Flower and Bandung Bondowoso and Roro Jonggrang taken from Look Ahead Book for Senior High School Students Year XI. The test consists of 30 multiple choice questions. Each question is related to the reading comprehension skills such as: main idea, references and word meaning. In analyzing the data the writer used t-score to see the significant difference between the two schools in reading comprehension. The mean and standard deviation of SMAN I Kuta Cot Glie are 18.75 and 2.77. While the mean and standard deviation of MAN Indrapuri are 17.58 and 2.97.the result of t-score of the two schools is 2.43. It was considered higher than t-value on the table of significance at level 0,05 and 48 for the degree of freedom which is state 1.684. Therefore, alternate hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. So, it can be concluded that the second year students of SMAN I Kuta Cot Glie perform better in reading comprehension than MAN Indrapuri. After knowing the different achievement of both schools in general, this study also tries to know the students’ ability in sub reading skills of both schools. However, after analyzing mean standard deviation and t-score of each skill of both schools, it can be concluded that there are not statistically different in sub reading skills between SMAN I Kuta Cot Glie and MAN Indrapuri students, although they have the different mean score.
