ABSTRACT
Using role play can be considered as one of media to improve students’ writing ability, especially in writing narrative text.This thesis entitled “The Use of Role Play in Writing Narrative Text” focus on finding out whether the students’ writing narrative ability improve or not after applying role play. Besides, it is also conducted to investigate students’ perception about using role play in writing narrative text. To obtain the data, the writer carry out the research in SMP Islam YPUI Banda Aceh. The population of this research are all of third level students of the school. Furthermore, two classes of the population are taken as sample; 24 students for both of the classes. The five 80-minute teaching is conducted in both classes. This research is designed quantitatively. The researcher uses some techniques of data collection to obtain the data, there are; pre-test, post-test and questionnaire. Based on the data obtained, it is found that students in experimental class who are taught by using role play have better achievement than students in control class . It is proved by the improvement of students’ post test score in the experimental class from 43.25 to 63.00, while the improvement score in control class is from 40.41 to 49.00.Meanwhile, the questionnaire result also showes that most of the studentsare interested in using role play as a media in writing narrative text and can improve their ability. However, there are some of them find the difficult words in the story that is performed.
