ABSTRACT

Students of SMA Negeri 1 Takengon had low achievement and faced difficulties in writing descriptive text, therefore to improve their ability in writing descriptive text, it is essential to consider a new strategy that would help students. In this time, the researcher interests to present Think Pair Share as the new strategy, therefore the researcher made a research under the title “The Effectiveness of Think Pair Share in Improving Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text.” This research was conducted to find how effective it is toward students’ ability in writing descriptive text and also what students’ obstacle in writing descriptive text are. The research was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this research was second grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Takengon. In collecting the data, researcher gave pre-test and post-test, and distributed questionnaires. Then, the researcher analyzed the data using statistical calculation. The result of this research indicated that there was improvement of using Think Pair Share toward students’ ability in writing descriptive text. The mean of post-test score (M=72,6) increase to the mean of pre-test (M=60,8), and also the result of t test shown t value is bigger than t table, 3,82>1,67. Then, the result of questionnaire shown that most of students agreed that think pair share improved their ability in writing descriptive text. Then, another fact that shown from the questionnaire students’ obstacles in writing descriptive text are: lack vocabulary, less idea, and did not master the grammar.
