INCREASING AUTONOMOUS LERANING THROUGH PEER ASSESSMENT IN ENGLISH SUBJECT (AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AT WRITING I CLASS OF UIN AR-RANIRY BANDA ACEH)
ABSTRACT
A language learner is demanded to play a role in every learning stages. Autonomous learning approach is likely needed to be fostered in language learning especially in writing. To gain student’s autonomy, peer assessment activity becomes a necessary to be applied in classroom. This thesis works on “Increasing Autonomous Learning through Peer Assessment in English Subject”. English subject in this research was specified into Writing class. It discusses an experimental study which concentrates in Writing I class of fourth semester students at UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. The aims of this study are: (1) to investigate the process of autonomous learning situation through peer assessment, and (2) to find out the outcome of autonomous learning effect from peer assessment. Experimental teaching was done to obtain the data needed. The participants were divided into two different groups, one as an autonomous group or experimental class and the other as a non-autonomous group or control class. Three meetings were conducted in those classes. The writer also used other techniques in collecting the data; observation, tests and questionnaires. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that the score of the experimental class students was higher than the control class students. Therefore, the writer concludes that peer assessment can bring an autonomous effect and a sufficient result for student’s writing skill. Furthermore, the analysis of questionnaires and the experimental teaching prove that the students are interested in doing peer assessment. In conclusion, the analysis of research result shows that peer assessment is an appropriate technique for university students to foster learner autonomy especially in EFL writing class.
