THE ENGLISH TEACHERS' AWARENESS OF UTILIZING INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET (IPA) CHART IN CONVERSATION CLASS (a study at Counversation Class of Ma'had Ali UIN ArRaniry)
ABSTRACT
In the Conversation Class, students are presupposed to actively pronounce the sound or voice of the words correctly. The existence of IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) Chart becomes the standard for students or teachers in sounding or pronouncing the words. The teachers’ role in teaching learning process, especially in the Conversation Class is undeniable. Teachers are recommended to introduce and to practice this IPA Chart. Based on the motives above, the writer was interested in conducting the research under the title “The teachers’ awareness of utilizing International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart in conversation class”. This research was conducted to seek whether the teacher are aware or not of utilizing IPA chart in conversation class and the reasons behind it, and also to show the implementation of using IPA chart as a basis of pronunciation rules to help the achievement of students’ good pronunciation by the teacher in conversation class. The research was qualitative research which provided three English teachers of Ma’had Ali UIN Ar-Raniry as subjects. In collecting the data, the writer applied some data collecting methods there were; observation, questionnaire, and interview. The writer analyzed the result of this research with systematic procedure, started from observation phase, gave a questionnaire and closed with interview section. Firstly, the result of data analyzing of questionnaire and interview positively indicate that the English teacher in conversation class in Ma’had Ali UIN Ar-Raniry were aware of utilizing International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart. Secondly, contrast with the result of questionnaire and interview, observation indicate that the teachers were not aware of utilizing International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart, but consciously, the teachers also guide the students’ pronunciation in the classroom orally. It indicates that the teacher know and understand what the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart function really is, but they were not aware already applied it in their classroom.
